Form VA-4
The VA-4 form, or Virginia Employee’s Withholding Exemption Certificate, is used by employees in Virginia to specify their personal exemption and withholding allowances for state income tax purposes. By completing this form, employees can adjust the amount of Virginia state income tax withheld from their paychecks based on their individual tax situation, including factors like dependents, deductions, and filing status. This helps ensure that the correct amount of state tax is withheld throughout the year, aiming to align with their overall tax liability and avoid significant underpayment or overpayment.
Form W-4
The W-4 form, officially known as the Employee’s Withholding Certificate, is used by employees to inform their employer how much federal income tax should be withheld from their paycheck. By completing this form, employees can adjust their withholding allowances based on their personal tax situation, including factors like marital status, dependents, and other deductions. The goal is to ensure that the right amount of tax is withheld throughout the year, helping to avoid a large tax bill or refund at tax time
