Google Account: Suspensions and Restores

Key Points:

  • Google accounts can be suspended by local colleges, the VCCS System Office, or Google for service violations such as uploading too many MP4 video files at one time or generating a lot of spam messages.

  • Information security officers at local colleges can restore user access to their Google accounts once it has been determined that the service violation has been remediated or if there was a false positive (erroneous flagging of suspicious activity when nothing actually occurred).  If the designated ISO is not available, a ticket can be generated to the VCCS System Office for additional support.

Instructions:

There are many reasons that Google accounts are suspended to include:

  1. The local college requests it due to a policy or a security violation -- see here for more details.

  2. The local college requests it due to legal reasons -- see here for more details.

  3. The VCCS System Office requests it per ASAC policy.

  4. The VCCS System Office requests it if the account has suspicious criteria (e.g., fake account used to apply or Google Drive abuse).

  5. The VCCS System Office requests it because the user never enrolled in classes and have been marked as discontinued from their academic program or plan in SIS (Student Information System).

  6. Google requests it for suspected account hijacking or misuse.

Google accounts will never be suspended for current or alumni users solely due to inactivity.  College staff should review the user account in MyReynolds to determine the circumstance that led to the account suspension and restore access accordingly.
