Assistance with Canvas (Students)

Canvas Student Access & Support Guide

Welcome to Canvas, the Learning Management System (LMS) used for many MGCC courses. Use this guide to learn how to access Canvas, find your courses, use official Canvas guides, understand who can help with course-related issues, and get support when something is not working.

Quick Summary

  • Access Canvas through myMGCC or by going directly to learn.vccs.edu.
  • Use your myMGCC username and password to sign in.
  • Your courses may not appear until the course is published and the course start date has arrived.
  • For assignment, quiz, test, grade, deadline, course-content, or missing-course questions, contact your instructor or Student Services. For login, password, browser, device, or Canvas loading issues, use Canvas Support or the MGCC I.T. Help Desk.

1. How Do I Access Canvas?

You can access Canvas from the MGCC website, the myMGCC portal, or the direct VCCS Canvas login page.

Option A: Access Canvas from the MGCC Website

  1. Go to the Mountain Gateway Community College website.
  2. Select myMGCC from the top of the page.
  3. Sign in with your myMGCC username and password.
  4. Select the Canvas tile.

Option B: Access Canvas Directly

  1. Go directly to VCCS Canvas.
  2. Sign in with your myMGCC username and password.

Tip

Your myMGCC username is usually provided after your application or enrollment process. If you do not know your username or password, contact Student Services or the MGCC I.T. Help Desk.

2. What Is Canvas Used For?

Canvas is where many MGCC courses provide class information, announcements, assignments, discussions, quizzes, grades, and other course materials.

Depending on the course and instructor, Canvas may be used for:

  • Viewing course announcements
  • Reading the syllabus
  • Submitting assignments
  • Taking quizzes or tests
  • Participating in discussions
  • Checking grades and instructor feedback
  • Accessing course files, links, and other learning materials

Important:

Canvas courses may not appear immediately after registration. A course may not be visible until the instructor publishes it and the course start date has arrived.

3. Why Don’t I See My Course in Canvas?

If you can sign in to Canvas but do not see a course, it does not always mean something is broken.

Common Reasons a Course May Not Appear

  • The course has not started yet.
  • The instructor has not published the course yet.
  • Your enrollment was recently added and has not finished processing.
  • You are looking at the wrong term or dashboard view.
  • You are signed in with the wrong account.

What You Should Do

  1. Confirm that you are enrolled in the course in SIS.
  2. Check your course start date.
  3. Check Canvas again after the course begins.
  4. If the course has started and still does not appear, contact your instructor or Student Services. The course may not be published yet, your enrollment may still be processing, or your registration status may need to be reviewed.

If you cannot sign in to Canvas at all, or Canvas will not load in your browser, use Canvas Support or contact the MGCC I.T. Help Desk.

4. Need Login or Password Help?

Security Notice:

For student security and identity protection, MGCC cannot reset passwords or make account changes based only on an email request. You must call or visit in person so your identity can be verified.

6. Using the Canvas Student Mobile App

Canvas also has a mobile app for students. The app can be useful for checking announcements, messages, grades, and course updates.

General Mobile App Steps

  1. Download the Canvas Student app from your device’s app store.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Search for your school or enter the Canvas URL when prompted.
  4. Use your myMGCC username and password when redirected to sign in.

The mobile app is helpful, but students should also know how to access Canvas from a web browser. Some assignments, quizzes, files, or course tools may be easier to use from a computer.

If assignment or quiz instructions are unclear, if you submit the wrong file, if you miss a deadline, or if you need another attempt, contact your instructor directly.

Important Course Policy Reminder

Only your course instructor can decide whether to grant additional attempts, extend deadlines, reopen assignments, reset quizzes, or change grades.

9. Is Canvas Down?

If Canvas will not load for you, the issue may be with Canvas, your internet connection, your browser, your device, the login system, or your individual account.

Check Canvas System Status

Use the Instructure / Canvas System Status Monitor to see whether Canvas or related Instructure services are reporting an outage.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

  • Try refreshing the page.
  • Try another browser.
  • Try a private or incognito browser window.
  • Try another device if available.
  • Restart your device.
  • Check whether other websites are loading.
  • Try using a different network, such as home internet or mobile data.

If Canvas appears to be working for others but not for you, contact the MGCC I.T. Help Desk and include the exact error message you are seeing.

10. What Information Should I Include When Asking for Help?

Providing clear information helps support staff understand the issue faster.

Include These Details

  • Your full name
  • Your myMGCC username if known
  • The course name and section if the issue is course-specific
  • The assignment, quiz, discussion, or page name if applicable
  • The exact error message
  • What device you are using
  • What browser or app you are using
  • Whether the issue happens on another browser or device
  • A screenshot, if it does not show passwords, Social Security Numbers, grades for other students, banking information, or other sensitive information

Privacy Reminder:

Do not send passwords, Social Security Numbers, banking information, or other sensitive personal information in a support ticket or email.

11. Common Questions
