MyVCCS: Name Changes

This article is primarily about Preferred Name changes. Legal name changes must typically be done through the college registrar or for employees, through their Human Resources department.

People may request to change their name in SIS and HR, but it is important to know that the Preferred Name can be edited by an individual, and that Preferred Name is what is used in Canvas, Google, Zoom, and other systems that depend on our Enterprise Directory. Setting a preferred name is under the Profile tile in SIS, or in the Personal Information section.

So, if a user wants to change their name in Canvas, for example, the answer is for them to update their Preferred Name in SIS. Sometimes there's simply an inconsistency, but the answer is the same. An update in SIS should trigger updates in our other systems and fix those discrepancies. The primary dependent system, EAD, updates overnight so the change in downstream systems may not be immediate.

Please note that a change in CaSe (e.g. from Mcbride to McBride) will not trigger an update in dependent systems, so a name should be changed to a different spelling first, and then back to the correct name with the correct case.

Some systems may allow name customization by end users. This is worth reviewing as well, for example, in Google's account Personal Info section.
