Cannot Access Canvas or a Canvas Course

Key Points:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in at least one (1) course to access it in Canvas.

  • Students can access Canvas through their MyReynolds login or by going to https://learn.vccs.edu.

  • Students can call the Reynolds Information Center at 804-371-3000 to resolve Canvas password issues.

Instructions:

If you cannot access Canvas, you will need to verify that you have registered and paid for a class.  After registration and payment, it can take up to 24 hours for the system to grant you access to Canvas.  If you still cannot access Canvas more than 24 hours after registration and payment, we recommend that you reset your MyReynolds password to make sure the system synchronizes all your student services.

You may do this through the following method(s):

  • Calling the Reynolds Information Center at 804-371-3000 (press 5 when prompted).

  • Once you set a new password, log-out, and make sure you wait just over 10 minutes before trying to log back into MyReynolds, Canvas, your student email, or the Student Information System (SIS).  If you attempt to access one of those services before 10 minutes has passed, it may cause your account credentials to be unsynchronized and you may need to reset your password again.

Once you enroll in a class and can access Canvas, there are a few reasons you may not be able to access your class.

  1. If you recently enrolled, it can take up to 24 hours for your class(es) to appear in Canvas.  The synchronization from the official class roster information in SIS is automatically done every four (4) hours.

  2. Unless otherwise specified, your class(es) may not be available to any students until the first day of classes for the semester.

  3. Make sure you enrolled in a full-term class.  Occasionally, students mistakenly enroll in partial-term classes that do not start until a later date.

  4. It is possible that you were enrolled in a class, but then the class was dropped due to a payment or attendance issue.

  5. More than 45 days have passed since the class ended.  Instructors are only required to allow students to access their course in Canvas up to 45 days after the class has ended (unless a student was granted a grade of "I" [incomplete] in which the student can have up to the end of the following semester to access the course in Canvas to finish any outstanding assignments).

If you reach your official class start date and still cannot access your class in Canvas, please call the Reynolds Information Center to ensure that you are still enrolled in your course(s).  If you are still enrolled, contact your instructor(s) to notify them of the issue.  Your instructor will need to ensure that you appear on the Canvas course roster and that the course is available to you.
