Microsoft Teams can be configured a few different ways to prevent interruptions during non-work hours, while in a meeting, or during a class.
Setting Quiet Hours
Setting quiet hours in Microsoft Teams is particularly useful for managing work-life balance and ensuring uninterrupted focus time. Do you have a set work schedule? Use quiet hours to prevent interruptions during non-work hours. Here are some key use cases:
-
Work-Life Balance: Quiet hours help you disconnect from work by silencing notifications during non-working hours, weekends, or vacations. This ensures you can relax and recharge without being disturbed by work-related alerts
-
Focus Time: During periods when you need to concentrate on specific tasks or projects, setting quiet hours can help minimize distractions from incoming messages and notifications.
- Open Teams. In the menu on the left, click the 3 dots to access the app menu. Choose Viva Insights.

- Choose Wellbeing from the menu. Then, scroll down to Quiet Hours and choose Change Settings

- Here you can set your quiet hours (days and times when Teams will not ring)

Tips: If you have a variable schedule, you can make your "default" quiet hours 8pm-8am. Then, you can use do-not-disturb to manually silence Teams in between your shifts (see below).
Do-Not-Disturb (DND )
Teams will silence all Teams-based notifications if your status is set to do-not-disturb. Here are few scenarios of when you might want to set your status to DND.
-
Deep Work: When you need to focus on tasks that require intense concentration, such as writing reports, coding, or analyzing data, DND helps you stay undisturbed by notifications.
-
Meetings and Presentations: During important meetings or presentations, enabling DND ensures you won't be interrupted by incoming messages or calls, allowing you to maintain professionalism and focus.
-
Personal Time: If you're taking a break, having lunch, or need some personal time during work hours, DND can help you disconnect temporarily without missing important notifications later.
-
After Hours: Similar to quiet hours, if you need to work late but don't want to be disturbed by non-urgent messages, DND can help you manage your work-life balance.
-
Urgent Tasks: When you're handling urgent or time-sensitive tasks that require your full attention, DND can help you avoid distractions.
1. To change your status, click your profile picture or circle with initials. Then select select your current status.

2. Change your status to Do Not Disturb

3. Reset status to change your status back to its default based on your outlook calendar availability. You must manually enable and disable Do not Disturb.
Key notes:
DND does not disable pop-up notifications from Outlook. Only Teams notifications.
You will still receive notifications for messages that have been marked urgent or sent from a priority contact.
