Patching: Fixing Un-Patched Admin Computers

Summary

How to patch a computer that would not do so over VPN, or while off-campus.

Issue/Question

A computer is brought to the Help Desk because it has not patched while off campus.

Resolution

  1. Plug the computer into an Admin port, either in the person's office or at the HD.
  2. Turn on the computer. Leave the computer on the login screen while it checks for an applies updates
  3. Look up the computer in KACE -> Devices -> Inventory. 
  4. Go into the computer information and scroll down and expand Security -> Patching Detect/Deploy Status.
  5. Kace Patches will start to appear. Keep an eye on the Scheduled Task Status Current Phase: The computer will indicate when it needs a reboot

  6. Continue until all Deployment Status entries say Patched, and the current phase reads as completed.

Emergency Patch Management

If any patches fail to apply, put the computer in Emergency Patch Management group

  1. Navigate to Security -> Patch Managment -> Schedules -> Emergency Patching--Deploy Now to Selected Machines
  2. Click Edit at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Proceed through the steps until you get to Devices, or directly click Devices on the list of steps. 
  4. Type the name of the computer and select it from the list. 
  5. Click Save.
  6. You can click the plus sign at the bottom of the screen next to the computer to see the progress of the patching.
