Signed on January 18, 2024, this establishes a framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across Virginia’s government, education, and law enforcement sectors.

 Government Use and Safeguards

  • Directs the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) to develop AI Policy and IT Standards.

  • Requires ethical guidelines, approval processes, and disclaimers for AI-generated outputs.

  • Mandates protection of personal data and cybersecurity protocols for AI use in state agencies.

 Education Guidelines

 Law Enforcement Standards

  • Calls for the development of AI usage standards specific to law enforcement personnel.

 Innovation and Budget

  • Allocates $600,000 from the “Unleashing Opportunity” budget to pilot AI initiatives.

  • Promotes innovation without imposing heavy-handed regulations on the private sector.

 AI Task Force

  • Establishes a biannual Artificial Intelligence Task Force to oversee implementation and provide recommendations.
