Seizure First Aid (Virginia § 40.1-11.4)

Virginia's Required Poster for Seizure First Aid information

Effective as of July 1, 2022, The General Assembly requires all employers of 25 or more employees in Virginia to physically post information about seizure first aid at their place of business in a location accessible and visible by employees.

To help someone having a seizure, you:

  1. Stay with them until they're awake and alert. It helps to time the event, remain calm, and check for medical ID.
  2. Keep them safe; moving or guiding them away from harm.
  3. Turn them onto their side, if they're not awake and aware. It helps to keep their airway clear, loosen tight neck clothes, and put something small and soft under their head.

Call 911 if:

  • Seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
  • Person does not return to their usual state
  • Person is injured, pregnant, or sick
  • First-ever or seizure or multiple repeated seizures
  • Difficulty breathing or seizure happens in water
